What Causes Tooth Sensitivity & How to Reduce the Pain

The pain you feel during these cleanings is likely a result of having overly sensitive teeth. A lot of people have this problem, yet getting your teeth cleaned is vital for good oral health. If you have this problem, you should understand why you have it and how you can decrease the sensitivity you experience.

The Causes of Tooth Sensitivity

When a dentist or hygienist cleans your teeth, he or she removes the plaque buildup from them. This process involves scraping the plaque off the teeth with a scaler, which is a dental tool that has a sharp point on it. If you feel pain during this, it is most likely the result of a lack of enamel on your teeth.

Enamel is a natural mineral found on the outer parts of teeth, and its main job is protecting teeth. Enamel naturally wears away with age, but it also wears away from bad habits. Here are the most common habits that lead to erosion of enamel:

  • Brushing your teeth with too much force or with the wrong type of toothbrush
  • Drinking highly acidic beverages, such as sport's drinks, wine and fruit juices
  • Having untreated cavities or gum disease
  • Failing to care for your teeth properly

When enamel wears away, it causes exposure of the inner parts of your teeth, and it causes exposure of nerves. The result of this is sensitivity in teeth, and you may experience this type of pain during dental cleanings or when eating or drinking hot and cold things.

How to Reduce Sensitivity

If you want to go through with teeth-cleaning services, you could ask the dentist for anesthesia to numb your mouth. This would instantly provide some relief, but it would not solve the problem. If you want longterm relief, your dentist might suggest taking certain steps.

One step that may help is switching to a different type of toothpaste and toothbrush. You should use a soft-bristled brush for daily cleanings, simply because soft brushes do no harm teeth as quickly as hardbristled brushes do. You should also switch to a toothpaste designed for sensitive teeth. After a few weeks of switching these things, you may notice a decrease in the sensitivity you experience.

Reducing sensitivity may also require rinsing your teeth with a fluoride rinse on a daily basis. While there is nothing you can do to increase the amount of enamel on your teeth, using fluoride can strengthen the enamel you still have.

Your dentist will also recommend repairing any problems you currently have with your teeth. If you have cavities, the dentist will want to remove and fill them. If you have gum disease, the dentist will suggest treatment for that. Without fixing existing problems, it will be hard to reduce the sensitivity you feel.

If your sensitivity is really intense, your dentist could use a procedure that involves composite bonding. Composite bonding is a material used most commonly for filling cavities, but dentists use it for other purposes too. A dentist can apply this material to your teeth to seal them. Once this occurs, the composite bonding acts like enamel by protecting your teeth and hiding the inner parts of your teeth.

Avoiding the dentist will never solve the problem you have with sensitivity. In fact, this may only worsen the problem.
